If you have an indoor cat, you know how hard it is to make sure that they are getting the proper exercise to keep them healthy. One way to ensure that they get moving is to leash train them (it's also great for bonding and socialization!).

Here are few tips to get you started:

Start by finding a harness that fits your cat properly (look for harnesses specifically designed for cats).

Let your cat get used to wearing it. Have your sweet fur ball wear it around the house for a few days (or as long as it takes) to allow him to get comfortable with the feel.

Once your cat seems to be comfortable with the harness, add the leash. Begin to take short walks around the house with the leash attached. If your cat is food motivated, reward your cat with his/her favorite treats.

When you feel like you have made some positive progress with the indoor practice walks, you are ready to move outside. Start slow and allow your cat to adjust to the surroundings. Pay close attention to your cats body language. Try not to let your cat get over stimulated.

As your cat becomes more comfortable with your short walks, slowly add time and distance.

The key to creating a pleasant experience is to pay attention to your cats body language. Don’t force your cat into a stressful situation. If you notice that your cat is becoming uncomfortable or overly distracted, cut the walk short or move to an environment that is less stressful for your cat. With patience and close attention, you can help your cat learn to enjoy the outdoors under your guidance and protection. Again, not all cats will take to leash walking. If your cat does not warm up to the idea, find some fun indoor alternatives to keep his/her interest. Check out the FAQ page for some great indoor play options.
